The Evaluation Questions

Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop of challenge forms and conventions of real media product?

I started my research by watching various styles of music videos, and came to a conclusion to create a music video that follows the norms of a standard music video. As I started my research into many different styles of music videos, I mainly focused on the way the music artist is represented. I observed different forms and conventions that each music video director used to present their ideas in the appropriate style to match their concept with the audience that each music video was targeted at. Because music videos have over the years been classified with genres and conventions, I find it to be very difficult for a music video to follow all of the conventions. Nowadays due to the various of music videos, it is hard to group music videos into a category as most of them stand alone. For example a very well known current artist such as Miley Cyrus, who stands out for her risky outfits with her music video "Wrecking Ball" which shows her swinging naked and it is something that is very dramatic and never been done before and then you have an artist such as Taylor Swift who's music video is more age appropriate and it appears to be more delicacy as it portrays her having the best time of her life with her love one but later on towards the end, the video becomes much more darker. My point is that two modern artists can be seen as similar but follow different conventions for their music videos and that's what makes them stand out and interesting.

My music video generally tries to develop conventions of real media products. The song I choose to do for my music video is "Broken-Hearted Girl" by BeyoncĂ©. This song followed a narrative and had a story. The narrative  is the order on how things happen. There are different types of narratives for example a linear narrative which is telling a story and plot in a chronological order. A non linear narrative doesn't work in a chronological order for example a music video can include flashbacks.
Within my music video I used a non linear narrative as I used flashbacks, I like the idea of my music video being non linear as it shows different aspects a music video can have. Artist such as Jason Derulo have influenced me on having flashbacks in music video, with his song "What If". I liked the rewind effect and Marissa ft Diggy with "i'm ready". The video is all shot in different camera angels and this is a crucial convention of a music video as camera angels can show emotions and feelings. The range of shots I used in my music video were close -ups, long shot and mid-shots.
As I have said before following a music video conventions can be difficult but however theorists within a media are a very important aspect in making a music video as they can help you determine whether your are following the right codes and conventions. I understand the concept of Andrew Goodwin's music video theory. He makes a point about the representation of the female body, which has no relevant to my music video but I do understand the attractive footage video of a female body being used to seduced a male audience. My music video has more relevant to Tzvetan Todorov music video theory of equilibrium and disequilibium. Within my music video todorov theory is expressed by
Equilibruim: the Flashbacks of the main character and her boyfriend.
Disequilibruim: the fighting scenes between the two

Lip syncing is another important aspect/conventions of a music video. Most music videos have lip syncing, this is important as if it is not done correctly it could ruin the music video. My music video contained lip syncing, without lip syncing I don't think you are able to show the artists emotions effectively. However now a days people tend to focus less on lip syncing, many videos are now becoming more and more off the wall focusing less on the contempt of the video, music videos are becoming bizarre for example Sigala music video "easy love" shows to main characters who are kids having a dance battle with other kids and the band Coldplay music video "Adventure of a lifetime" which features monkey in a jungle jumping around, playing instruments throughout the whole video. The more and more music videos becomes inventing it allows the artists a sense of freedom to express themselves and in my opinion I find it interesting.


Question 2: How effective is the combinations of your main product and ancillary text?
Because music videos are aired on either television, the internet, whilst songs can be either be physically bought via CD or can be digitally downloaded from sound cloud. I thought I could broaden awareness of other media institution by advertising the premiere of this music video, through social media such as Facebook,  Twitter and Instagram only. The artist who have influenced me to do this is Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean is particularly keen on Tumblr, a site where you post and repost multi media post, he uses this to upload his own media post for his fans to see, it gives a the fans a chance to also get to know him personally. As a teenager I find social media much easier to use and it's something that's not out of used and boring such as making a poster to promote your artist. Not many people read posters anymore where as social media is more accessible as nearly everyone has a smartphone. I personally would not purchase any CD's or if I do I never pay attention to the digipak but once I grasped the importance of a digipak and done some research on it , I realised it was essential to have. Rihanna's digipak cover has certainly influenced me to make mine similar to hers as it is very simple and eye catching.  I decided to call my album cover "Broken-Hearted Girl" as it is about a girl going through a rough relationship with her partner.


Question 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Firstly I created a questionnaire to start off with asking people what kind of music video they preferred to watch and as a result the majority of them said R&B. Secondly I asked some people what the first word was that came into their heads when they thought of a music video. Their answer was:
  • love
  • narrative
  • drugs
  • lip syncing
  • sex
  • dance
  • emotions
  • cars
  • sexy girls
My music video contained love, narrative, lip syncing, dance and emotions as you can see. Even though it may been seen as the same music video as everyone watches all the time, I did try to make it interesting for my fan base.
The feedback for those who have seen my music video was positive, more and more people were talking about it as it progressed. People seemed  very intrigued and impressed of the visuality of my music video. If I was to something different I would have introduced more situations For example show more emotions.

Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research planning and evaluation stages?
In the making of my music video and ancillary text I used a range of media technologies. To film my music video I used a video camera and a tripod and used final cut pro to create the final piece of my music video, I did all the editing on the school mac computers because they had the new software of final cut pro which was very effective and easy to use.
From the beginning of starting my coursework, I have been using a blog (blogger) to show the process from choosing a genre to coming up with ideas on how my music video should be. My blog shows all of my work, research and planning and I made sure my blog was update and easily accessible.
  • Photoshop 
  • I found photoshop a little bit difficult to use at first but I got hang of it later on. By using photoshop I have gained a new skill and this skills can always be useful later on in life.


  • YouTube 
  • YouTube played a big part in research and planning. I used it to firstly research songs of different genres, artist etc. I used YouTube to look at iconic and inspirational music videos from over the years and looked at why and how they were seen iconic.

  • Internet
  • Using the internet in general was a crucial role in planning. The internet allowed me to research more about my artist and the aspect to music videos.

  • InDesign
  • InDesign was the only technology that I really struggled in. I found it extremely difficult to use as I just couldn't grasp of it. by not giving up, I finally managed to grasp the use of it and the end result of my digipak is great.
